How Our Travels Inspire Our Life At Home

California creative inspired by travel leather working wood working

We love traveling but who doesn’t love the comfort of home, too? When we travel, we enjoy perusing shops and checking out the local arts and crafts, purchasing special items that resonate with us to bring home. These treasures are reminders of fond memories that enrich our daily lives.

But traveling also inspires our own creative side! We can’t always be traveling and our work can sometimes be stressful, so we spend a lot of our time off at home creating. When we built our home, we….well, Daniel….planned the garage space specifically to be a workshop for our many handmade projects. We have spaces for wood and leather working, welding, sewing, and metal working. He even made sure there was heating and air conditioning in there so I would be comfortable in the shop, too. That’s true love, folks!

Daniel has always been interested in leather working and has taken several classes at Alden’s School of Leather Trades. Check out our trip to Burns, Oregon and Alden’s School of Leather Trades here.

Butte Strong collars

On November 8th, 2018, the Camp Fire in Paradise, California broke out. Many animals were lost and separated from their families, or displaced. We wanted to do something to help the victims of the Camp Fire so Daniel came up with the idea to make leather dog collars for victims, many of whom had lost everything, including the collars off their dogs necks. This was a fun and crazy project! We received many donations from leather suppliers and handmade about 600 collars and leashes for victims of this tragedy.

Why not make a business to funnel all this creativity through? That’s exactly how Connell Custom Leather Crafts was founded. We have been in business for a little over a year now, and make all kinds of things, not just leather pieces.

Daniel is really the mastermind behind all the leather working but I enjoy the creative process, too.

I love the creativity of wood and textiles. Outdoor spaces inspire me and I enjoy transforming those feelings into artwork.

metal cuff bracelets

We just started creating these metal cuff bracelets. I don’t know why, but they are proving to be a bit more difficult that we initially expected! Working through difficulties is part of the process, I suppose.

Though we can’t be traveling all the time, our adventures inspire our home life daily. We love spending time funneling our creativity through different mediums. Do you have a creative side inspired by travel? What kinds of things do you like to make? We’d love to hear from you! Please share your comments and don’t forget to like and follow our blog.
